frederick celtic festival report

May 13, 2006

Weather - Beautiful day, partly cloudy and mid-60's

BS - 35'1
OS - F
HWFD - 36'8
LWFD - 69'8
HH - 100'4
LH - 119'5
Caber - 70deg
Sheaf (20#) - 22'
WOB - 14'

Overall Place - 5th

BS - My wrist continues to bother me with the stones. I could not muster much of powerful push with the stone.

OS - This was a beautiful stone. I hope to get to throw it again sometime. I fouled all three of my throws over the trig. I would normally have taken a safety throw after the first foul, but did not today.

HWFD - Fouled my first two throws. Talk about getting behind in the count. Somehow managed to stay between the lines on the third.

LWFD - The first throw was the only fair throw, and I believe that was a 'gimmie' from the judge.

HH - The HH was not too bad. Two of my throws were just over 100' and I feel there is a *lot* more improvement to come on these.

LH - We threw the LH after the WOB as the last event due to the field size. My back was not working too well at this point, but managed to get out a decent toss.

Caber - This caber competition will probably be the most unique ever...we threw the caber 'backwards' since it was so light. We placed the big end of the caber in our hands leaving the little end on the top. Very weird. I only managed a 70deg turn.

Sheaf -The sheaf was absolutely horrendous today. I am generally good for 28'+ with a 20# bag, but today I could not even clear 25'. Had to go pout a little after this terrible performance.

WOB - WOB was pretty much the same as last games. 14' went pretty easy, but 15' is still alluding me.

Was a great day to make my leap into the pro ranks. Two of the pros I have known since I have started throwing were there, including the thrower that got me started. I also made one big realization: I need to stop trying to emulate the throwing style of other athletes, and do what works for me. It is a simple rule which I tell everybody else, but I have been ignoring as of late. I am going back to what works.
